In 1857, there was a rebellion in India which occurred because the native people were done with the ruling English East India Company. There had always been revolt and rebellion against the English East India Company, but this time the rebellion was the most powerful and posed as a greater threat than the previous rebellions had. The English East India Trade Company had weakened the native peoples capitalist relationships with other countries.
The rebellion of 1857 was the biggest threat to the English East India Trade Company. This revolt was mainly led by the landlords and the higher-class people but had a big support from all of the lower castes in India. The native people were supportive of this movement. Their motive to be followers was that the English East Trade Company took their autocratic powers taken from them. This has caused the native people to not have opportunities to work and be successful. This causes the native people to lose money and make them lower in the caste system, which brings down the whole opportunities to work and make living for themselves. The system’s of land settlement took away peasants and natives rights which leads to more power to the moneylenders. A causing reason for dislike towards the British rule was that they also wanted to take over on the cultural aspect. The British wanted to wipe out the Indian culture, which caused great controversy. By making this cultural attack, the native people came to realize that the British were taking advantage of them and their society.
Another reason as to the revolts against the English East Trade Company was that the peasants were stripped of their money and rights by having to pay unnecessary taxes that the higher class do not have to pay. The Worlds Together Worlds Apart textbook gives an explanation about how “the company instituted far-reaching changes in administration in the 1840s… These infuriated local people and laid the foundation for the world’s most violent and concerted movements of protests against colonial authority” (Tignor, Adelman, Aron, Kotkin, Marchand, Prakash, Tsin 620). The group leading the new vision of the was the Indian Military. This helped the revolt because the British needed the military to protect them. Th Military was mostly made up of Indians. Even if the British did not agree with the Military, they could not do anything because the British need the Military. The peasants then saw how the military was standing up to the British which gave them the courage to stop giving into the pressure of the British. The actions taken by the Military and local people was to stand up by not supporting and giving into the British rule. The Military’s rebellion showed great success within the region. The local people stood up against the British and this caused a chain of courage throughout all of India. Even though the British stayed in power, the Indian people were given back their rights and their culture was not attacked. The East Indian Company was terminated by the Royal Family, and the Royal Family came into power. They gave back all of the locals’ rights and let them live their lives more freely.
By the end of the rebellion, the British were still in power but the Military and the native people were given back all of their stolen rights. By being given their rights back, they now have more of an opportunity to make more money and become more successful.
